 July 21, 2010 - HARLINGEN, TX – The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings took an early lead against the Amarillo Dillas and never looked back as they defeated Amarillo 10-3 on Tuesday night to avoid a four-game sweep at Harlingen Field.
Dillas starter Richard Jessup (2-3) got the loss, allowing six runs but only three earned in five-and-a-third innings of work. WhiteWings starter Luis Montano (4-4) went eight innings and allowed only one earned run while striking out six.
The WhiteWings got on the board first in the first as Javis Diaz and Yeuyrs Tejada both walked, while Luany Sanchez and Welington Dotel both hit RBI singles for a 2-0 lead.
Amarillo got their first run in the third as Jermel Lomack walked, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch for a one-run deficit. Rio Grande Valley responded in the bottom of the third as Kevin Griffin led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error. Arlon Quiroz hit a two-run homer later in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The Dillas scored again in the fifth as Brian Bueno walked to lead off, went to second on a Joaquin Rodriguez single and scored on a Carlos Figueroa RBI single for their second run. The WhiteWings again scored as Wellison Baez hit an RBI fielder’s choice to score Sanchez in the fifth for a 6-2 advantage.
Sanchez would score again in the seventh while the Dillas got their third run in the eighth. Figueroa singled to lead off, went to second on an Andrew Wong single, went to third on an error and scored on a Rob Recuenco sacrifice fly for a 7-3 score.
The WhiteWings added three unearned runs in the eighth after an error on Lomack and a three-run homer by Tejada. Amarillo wouldn’t score again to fall by a score of 10-3.
With the loss, the Dillas fall to 30-22 while the WhiteWings improve to 20-30. Following a Wednesday off day, the Amarillo will travel home to take on Laredo on Thursday for the opening game of a four-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm on AudioSportsOnline via www.myamarillodillas.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
